Cricketers of India



Cricket is presently called the unofficial national sport of India. This sport is associated with the history and existence of the country. The oldest record existence of this sport is during the 17th century when the sailors in a seaport in Kutch played a friendly match. In 1792, the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club were formed and in 1799, another cricket club was established called the Seringapatam.



In 1864, the First Class Cricket in India had begun. This marked the match played between the Calcutta and Madras. For the first time in 1877, the Bombay Presidency Match was played. The match was then changed to Bombay Triangular and afterwards to Bombay Quadrangular. Apparently, between the years 1892 and 1893, the First Class Cricket Status was awarded to India.

The English team arrived in India between the years of 1889 and 1890. This was the first foreign cricket teams that arrived in the country. George Vernon was the captain of the team. However, the matches played by this team were not considered to be under First Class Cricket status. Between the years, 1892 and 1893, two matches were played in Bombay and Poona comprising the Parsees team and the Europeans team. Today, Bombay is called Mumbai while Poona is called Pune. These matches were considered the humble beginning of First Class Cricket Status in India. Afterwards, four matches under First Class Cricket Status were played between the Indian team and the English team on January 26-28, 1893. The English team was led by Lord Hawke.

The Ranji Trophy was another support for the First Class Cricket Status in India. It had begun between the years 1934 and 1935, and continues until today. The first winner of the two Ranji Trophy championships was the Bombay Team.

India takes the pride of producing the finest cricketers in the world. The famous names of Vjay Merchant, Prince Ranjitsinghji, Mahendra Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, and Nawab Patudi have brought glory to the country through their cricketing field. Their individual cricketing achievements are saga of individual heroics deeds.

Over the years, Indian Cricket team had made its name in the international scene. It was in year 1932 when the Indian team started playing Test Cricket during the English Season at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. The team was defeated by the English team with the match of 158 runs.

The decade of 1960s was strength for the Indian Cricket team. This was the time when the team had stretched their matches with foreign teams like Pakistan, Australia, England, and New Zealand. In decade of 1970s, the team gained its most cherished possession, the Spin Quartet, which is compose of Bishan Singh Bedi, Srinivas Venkataraghavan, B.S.Chandrasekhar, and E.Prasanna. The team was also gifted with two great batsmen, Gundappa Vishwanath and Sunil Gavaskar.

In 1980s, the Indian Cricket team had scaled into its new team heights, the ODI (One Day International) Cricket, which was captained by Kapil Dev. This team had won the 1983 Cricket World Cup that was attended by many accomplished players like Mahinder Amarnath and Madan Lal.

The decade of 1990s will always be remembered by the Indian Cricket Team because of Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin Tendulkar is considered as one of the greatest cricket players in the world because he outclassed every other record of cricket batsman. Apart from Sachin, the names of Javagal Srinath, Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble, and Rahul Dravid also emerge in this decade as they paid great contributions to the various international championships won by the team.

The Indian Cricket Team continues to show excellent performances in various championships both in local and international. It continues to search for remarkable victories and new faces of Indian cricketers. Among the new talented cricketers of India today, include Yousuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Munaf Patel, S.Sreesanth, and many more. In 2007, the team comprising of new, young, and talented players had won the 20-20 Cricket World Cup. It was under the keen captainship of Dhoni.
